Varlam Shalamov

Varlam Shalamov (1907-1982) was a Russian author born in Vologda. He is best known for his poignant short stories and essays that reflect his experiences in the Soviet labor camps. Shalamov spent much of his later life in Moscow, where he continued to write until his death.
